To perform the awkward balloon. one must hold their arm out at a 90 degree angle from their body with the hand in the shape of a fist. To perform the awkward umbrella, one must hold up an imaginary umbrella and move their head around slightly to try and stay under this imaginary umbrella.

They are gestures made after a line or series of lines that have been spoken that have now resulted in an uncomfortable silence or noticeably awkward moment.

...or just a REALLY awkward situation in general.
